Curriculum - Two Methodologies that complement each other.
The curriculum at Mount Carmel Christian School has been structured to offer a balance of individualised and corporate learning. Along with the Bible being understood as God’s revealed word to mankind, it is based around the nationally identified eight Key Learning Areas of Maths, English, Society and the Environment (SOSE), Science, Technology, L.O.T.E., The ARTS and Health and Physical Education. MCCS uses two distinct approaches to learning, but within both those approaches are a range of teaching strategies that allow students to develop their learning across key literacy, numeracy and comprehension skills, as well as thinking skills. It is important to remember in any consideration of the school’s curriculum offering that these two methodologies operate side by side and allow for a balance between individualised and corporate learning.
Individualised, Self-Paced Learning
In the student directed approach MCCS uses the Accelerated Christian Education program (ACE ) as its core curriculum. This program is developed and produced by the School of Tomorrow which is based in the United States of America.
The ACE program allows students to work at their own PACE by providing a learning materials and class structure that supports the independent progression of students. The program is packaged into modules called PACEs (Packet of Accelerated Christian Education). Each classroom where ACE is used will have a registered teacher and a teacher’s aide assigned to it. The role of the teacher is to ensure the students are engaging in the learning materials correctly, to identify learning difficulties and develop solutions, to assist and teach students through sections of the materials they find difficult and to nurture and support their spiritual growth and well-being. Teachers in the ACE classroom are required to be highly relational with their students and spend the vast majority of their classroom time interacting with students on an individual basis. The work flow in the ACE program is largely controlled by the efforts and ability of the student and supervised and facilitated by the classroom teacher. More about ACE
Teacher Directed - Group
The staff of Mount Carmel Christian School also offer teacher directed classes. The style and manner of these classes are similar to any other school in Victoria and are designed to supplement the ACE program and offer students the opportunity to learn and work in student groups. In contrast to the ACE program the subject matter and work flow in these classes is controlled by the teacher. More about Teacher directed...
